What is a full groom?
A full groom is the most complete grooming appointment we offer. It combines a bath and blow-dry with a haircut shaped to your dog's breed, coat and lifestyle, plus nails, ears, sanitary areas and paw pads. Your dog leaves clean, comfortable and looking like a freshly styled version of themselves.
- Full grooming
- A head-to-tail service that includes bathing, drying, brushing, a haircut or trim, nail care, ear cleaning and hygiene trims, completed in one appointment.
Many owners think of grooming as just a haircut, but a great full groom starts long before the clippers come out. We begin by looking over your dog's coat and skin, noting any mats, hot spots, dry patches or sensitive areas. That quick check helps us choose the right shampoo, decide how much brushing the coat needs and plan a haircut that will actually work for your dog's daily life.
Because everything happens inside our fully equipped mobile van, your dog gets one-on-one attention from start to finish. There are no kennels, no other barking dogs and no waiting around for pickup. It's one of the main reasons owners in Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Los Altos switch to mobile grooming.
Who is full grooming best for?
Full grooming is best for dogs whose coats keep growing or need regular shaping, such as doodles, poodles, shih tzus, Yorkies, Maltese, schnauzers and many mixed breeds. It also suits any dog that needs a complete refresh after months between appointments, or owners who simply want everything done in one visit.
If your dog has hair rather than a short, shedding coat, a full groom is usually the right choice. Long and curly coats tangle as they grow, and without regular trims they can mat close to the skin, which is uncomfortable and can hide skin problems. Owners of curly coats may also want to read about our dedicated doodle grooming.
- Doodles, poodles and other curly or wavy coats
- Shih tzus, Lhasa apsos, Maltese, Havanese and Yorkies
- Schnauzers, terriers and wire-coated mixes that need shaping
- Senior dogs who need a calm, patient pace
- Dogs who get stressed in busy salons or car rides
- Puppies ready to graduate from puppy grooming
How often should my dog get a full groom?
Most dogs with continuously growing hair do best with a full groom every four to eight weeks. Curly coats and longer styles often need the shorter end of that range, while shorter trims can stretch a little longer. Regular brushing at home between visits helps keep the coat healthy and mat-free.
| Coat type | Typical examples | Suggested full-groom frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Curly / wavy | Doodles, poodles, bichons | Every 4–6 weeks |
| Long silky | Shih tzus, Yorkies, Maltese | Every 4–6 weeks |
| Wire / terrier | Schnauzers, terrier mixes | Every 6–8 weeks |
| Double coat | Goldens, Aussies, huskies | Every 8–12 weeks, plus de-shedding as needed |
| Short / smooth | Labs, beagles, pugs | A bath and brush is usually enough |
Your groomer can suggest a schedule after the first visit, once we've seen how your dog's coat grows and how it holds up between appointments. Lifestyle matters too: dogs who hike the Peninsula trails or swim often benefit from more frequent visits.

How much does full grooming cost in Palo Alto?
The cost of a full groom depends on your dog's size, coat type and condition, how long it has been since the last groom, the style you want and your dog's temperament. Heavily matted coats take longer. Contact us or start a booking for a quote based on your specific dog.
We don't publish one flat price because every dog is different. A small, well-maintained coat is very different from a large doodle that hasn't been groomed in months.
Keeping a regular schedule usually makes each visit quicker and more comfortable for your dog. Add-ons such as teeth brushing or special treatments are described on our extra services page.

Frequently asked questions
Timing depends on size, coat and condition. Small, well-kept dogs finish faster than large or matted coats. We'll give you an estimated window when you book.
Yes. Share photos or describe the length you like, and your groomer will tailor the style to what's practical and comfortable for your dog's coat.
We gently work out light tangles. For severe matting, a shorter clip is often the kindest option for your dog's skin. We'll always discuss it with you first.
Someone should be available to hand off your dog and receive them after the groom. Details are on our how it works page.
Yes. We work at a calm pace, offer breaks and adapt positioning for older joints, all in a quiet one-on-one space.
