Why do doodles need specialized grooming?
Doodle coats combine poodle curl with the texture of a retriever, shepherd or other breed, so they vary widely and tangle easily, especially at the ears, legs, collar and armpits. Specialized doodle grooming means brushing down to the skin, drying the coat straight and fluffy, and cutting a style that suits that particular coat.
- Doodle grooming
- Grooming tailored to poodle-cross coats, focused on preventing and removing mats, fluff-drying the curl, and shaping a balanced haircut.
Doodles are one of the most popular dogs on the Peninsula, and they're wonderful companions. But their coats are high-maintenance. The fluffy look that owners love is exactly the coat that traps burrs, foxtails, sand and moisture. Without regular grooming, mats can form close to the skin where they're hard to see and uncomfortable for your dog.
Our groomers take time to check every area that commonly tangles, then plan a cut that balances looks with practicality. A shorter cut is easier during dry foxtail season, while a slightly longer teddy-bear look can be lovely if you're brushing regularly at home.
How often should a doodle be groomed?
Most doodles should be professionally groomed every four to six weeks. Longer, fluffier styles and very curly coats usually need the shorter end of that range, while shorter cuts can sometimes stretch to six or eight weeks. Brushing a few times a week at home is the best way to prevent matting between visits.
| Doodle coat | Typical feel | Suggested frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Curly (fleece to wool) | Tight spirals, poodle-like | Every 4–6 weeks |
| Wavy | Loose waves, very fluffy | Every 5–7 weeks |
| Straight / flat | Retriever-like, sheds more | Every 6–8 weeks, plus de-shedding |
| Any coat in a short cut | Easy-care length | Every 6–8 weeks |

How does a mobile doodle grooming appointment work?
We arrive at your home in our fully equipped van, talk through the style and length you want, then complete the whole groom inside the van, one-on-one. Large doodles especially appreciate skipping the car ride and salon kennel. When finished, your fluffy pup is walked back to your door.
Bring photos of a cut you love, or tell us what bothers you about the current one, such as the face being too long or the legs too fluffy. Get started on our booking page. We groom doodles across Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Mountain View, Redwood City and more.
How much does doodle grooming cost in Palo Alto?
Doodle grooming cost depends on your doodle's size, coat type, how matted the coat is, the time since the last groom, the style requested and your dog's temperament. Large, heavily tangled doodles take the most time. Booking regularly keeps each appointment shorter and more comfortable. Contact us for a quote.
If your doodle is heavily matted, the kindest option is often a shorter clip so the coat can grow back healthy. We always explain options before we start.
How can I keep my doodle mat-free between grooms?
Brush your doodle several times a week with a slicker brush, then follow with a metal comb to make sure you've reached the skin. Pay extra attention to ears, armpits, collar, legs and tail. Dry your doodle thoroughly after swims or rainy walks, because damp curls mat fastest.
