What is a de-shedding treatment?

A de-shedding treatment is a bath and brush focused on removing the soft, loose undercoat that double-coated dogs shed. It uses specific products, a powerful dryer and undercoat tools to release hair that would otherwise end up on your floors, furniture and clothes. It doesn't shave or cut the coat.

Undercoat
The dense, soft layer of fur beneath the outer guard hairs on double-coated dogs. It insulates and sheds heavily, especially in spring and fall.

Double-coated breeds are built for it: the undercoat keeps them warm and the outer coat protects the skin. But when they "blow" coat, it seems to come out in clouds. Regular de-shedding helps the coat do its job, allows air to reach the skin and keeps your home a lot less furry.

We never shave double coats as a shedding solution. Shaving can affect how the coat grows back and removes natural protection from the sun. Thorough de-shedding is the coat-friendly alternative.

Which dogs benefit most from de-shedding?

De-shedding benefits double-coated and heavy-shedding breeds most: golden retrievers, Labradors, huskies, malamutes, German shepherds, Australian shepherds, corgis, Bernese mountain dogs, Pomeranians and Samoyeds. Straighter-coated doodles that shed can benefit too. It's especially helpful during seasonal shedding in spring and fall.

  • Golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers
  • Huskies, malamutes and Samoyeds
  • German shepherds and Australian shepherds
  • Corgis, Bernese mountain dogs and Pomeranians
  • Shedding doodle mixes (see doodle grooming)

How often should a dog get de-shedding?

Most heavy shedders do well with de-shedding every six to eight weeks, and more often during spring and fall coat blows. Dogs who live mostly indoors on the Peninsula may shed lightly year-round, so a regular schedule helps keep things manageable. Brushing at home between visits extends the results.

How does a mobile de-shedding appointment work?

Our van parks at your home, and your groomer brings your dog inside for a one-on-one session. We pre-brush, bathe, condition and blow out the coat, then finish with a thorough undercoat brush-out. All that loose fur stays in our van, not your bathroom. Your dog returns lighter and fluffier.

Book online or call (650) 441-9000. De-shedding is popular in Palo Alto, Los Altos Hills, Woodside and Portola Valley, where many active outdoor dogs live.

How much does de-shedding cost in Palo Alto?

De-shedding cost depends on your dog's size, coat density, how much undercoat is ready to release and how long since the last treatment. A husky in full coat blow takes far longer than a lightly shedding Lab. Contact us or start a booking to get a quote for your dog.

Regular de-shedding usually makes each visit faster, because less undercoat builds up between treatments.

Will de-shedding stop my dog from shedding?

No treatment stops a healthy dog from shedding, because shedding is natural. But de-shedding removes a large amount of loose undercoat at once, so noticeably less hair ends up around your home in the following weeks. Combined with brushing at home, it makes shedding season much easier to live with.
